A fantastic talk by Hans Rosling from the TED conference archives. Rosling does a nice job of debunks some myths about the so-called “developing world.” But really what carries the point home is the stunning animation software developed by Rosling’s Gapminder Foundation. The software was recently acquired by Google, so expect to see more soon, but the Gapminder site also has some more videos of it in action.
It’s difficult to explain, but well worth watching — you’ve never seen such complex data made so simple to understand.
On a separate note I find it hilarious/sad that a conference dedicated to “open” tech and “big” ideas can’t even offer a simple chunk of code to embed the movie (there’s a free download I could repost, but come on, this is 2008).
